Morley Glass partners closely with Italian company Pellini and it is now the UK’s largest manufacturer of the market-leading Screenline integral blind systems which go into all its Uni-Blinds® products. Significant increase in demand from existing customers, coupled with an influx of new customers over the past 12-24 months, has pushed up output of its Uni-Blinds® integral blinds from an average of 2,500 units a week to around 3,500.

This growth in volumes was targeted by Morley Glass and set out in its five-year plan back in 2016 as it saw huge potential to introduce the concept of integral blinds to more and more homeowners, driven by an appetite for more privacy, sun shading and a comfortable living and working environment. That was a key reason why Morley Glass invested in moving to its current 50,000 sq. ft site which offered plenty of capacity to grow when it first made the move.

Ian Short, Morley Glass MD said: “Despite the challenges of the pandemic, which saw our production lines at a standstill for six weeks in 2020, the team has pulled out all the stops to exceed our target output for Pellini blinds production. The masses of information from an influx of sources can leave you feeling paralysed and unsure of where to even begin. In fact, a recent survey by Wealthify found that two in five of us feel a societal pressure to be more ethical.

With let’s delve into the biggest marketing villain of them all: greenwashing.

What is greenwashing?

Don’t quite know what ‘greenwashing’ is? Fear not. Three-quarters of UK consumers don’t know either and only 37% of the most conscious consumers amongst us – 18–24-year-olds – have recently admitted that they could spot a brand that’s ‘greenwashing’.

Greenwashing provides the consumer with the impression that their products are environmentally friendly, even when that is not the case. Companies will often lead their consumers to believe that they are doing more to help the environment than they are. These companies are not outrightly lying but, it’s certainly not a case of little white lies, either. They may release a ‘green’ product produced somewhat sustainably, but their overall environmental footprint remains the same. A bit like putting tape over a puncture and hoping for the best.

How do you spot greenwashing?

Sometimes, products that have been ‘green-washed’ are a little too shouty about it. The products will be covered in green-branding and over-the-top eco-friendly language. You shouldn’t take what a company has to say about sustainability at face value. If they are truly ‘green’, they will provide their consumer with the evidence. To apply the ultimate cynicism rule of thumb: if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

3 ways to avoid greenwashing

  1. Look for proof of a brand’s claims: look on a company’s social channels and their website to see how the brand presents itself as a whole and if they live up to their claims.
  2. Trust credible sources: Ethical Consumer offers independent ethical consumer guidance so is a great place to double check if a brand can stand-up to it’s claims.
  3. Think about products beyond the one you’re considering buying: a brand may claim that a particular product is ethical, but the concept might not go hand-in-hand with the rest of its product offering or wider business practices.

Isn’t going green too expensive?

There is a preconception that going green means going pricey. It’s true that some sustainable and ethical products are more expensive but as a consumer it’s important that you balance up the product that’s available to you and the long-term benefits the product will bring. Often sustainable products do exactly what they say on the tin; they are more sustainable and therefore you get more longevity and use out of a product. In doing so, you’re able to make ethical strides and play a part in saving the planet.

Getting going without the greenwashing

Knowledge is king! Finding out more about the brands you shop with and their ethical score can be a good starting point in determining where your commitments lie and how this marries up with your purse strings. It also means you avoid brands that don’t live up to authentic ethical standards.

Color psychology plays a major role in the advertising and successful sales. Package color has an effect on consumers and can draw them in or put them off.

To see which colors are used the most, Electrix International , a major supplier of electrical enclosures and cable management systems, has analyzed nearly 2,500 grocery products. Here, we find out which shade is used the most to influence the buying habits of grocery shoppers.

What is the magic color?

Across 10 categories, which include cookies, chocolate, soda drinks, and ice cream, the most-used color for packaging is light gray. In fact, 20.6% of all products analyzed are packaged and marketed to consumers using this color.

The theme for less vibrant colors follows suit in second and third place, with black (11%) and dark red (8%) joining light gray in the top picks for packaging. You’re less likely to see light purple (one item), blue (three items) and lime (three items) on everyday items.

Category crunching

On closer inspection, the use of light gray tends to be complemented by dark blue and light blue for cookies and ice creams. Meanwhile, red and dark red appears mostly on coffee, cereal, and potato chips.

Using data from Walmart’s online grocery service, the name, brand, and image of up to 355 different products in ten food and beverage categories was collated, totaling 2,422 products across the range. An algorithm then analyzed colored pixels to calculate the top three colors in each product image. The following list shows a full overview of the products analyzed and the colors used to stand out on shelves:

  1. Candy (234 Products) – gold, orange
  2. Canned Food (354 Products) – light gray, dark blue
  3. Cereal (188 Products) – light gray, dark red
  4. Chocolate (27 products) – ivory, dark gold
  5. Coffee (355 products) – light gray, red
  6. Cookies (330 products) – light gray, dark blue
  7. Ice Creams (321 products) – light gray, light blue
  8. Potato Chips (269 products) – light gray, dark red
  9. Soda (37 products) – dark gold, green
  10. Tea (307 products) – dark gold, black

Just 22% of products tended to have only one color on their packaging with cereal being the most consistent category. Ice cream is most likely to have more than one color on its packaging, with dairy lovers treated to more variation on the front of their tubs and cartons.

The breakdown of product types and the amount of colors used for each is detailed below, with canned food, coffee, and ice cream very similar in terms of results.

What will the future bring for packaging?

A brand’s identity is closely linked to the colors it uses because colors often resonate with strong emotions. The UK produced 99 kilograms of plastic waste per person, per year, second only to the US, which produce 105 kilograms.

Using the information from Statista, we have documented global plastic production from 1950 to 2018 and analysed it alongside global population figures and the introduction of new laws. From this, we’ve created a graph to show exactly where we are in terms of our use of plastic.

The plastic timeline

From the graph, you can see the rise of plastic production is in line with population growth. This also correlates with the fact that laws relating to plastic only started to become more common from 2006.

But, as the key talking points show, there’s plenty to discuss when it comes to the plastic timeline.

Key talking points

  • Neil Armstrong plants a nylon flag on the moon in 1969 as plastic starts to become a go-to material in the 1970s.
  • In 1977, the plastic bag was introduced to the grocery industry as an alternative to the paper bag—something we’re trying to revert back to 40-plus years later.
  • Production takes a noticeable dip as laws start to be introduced.
  • 2008 was a noticeable period on the timeline. In this year, global production dropped as China announced a ban on supermarkets handing out plastic bags in shops, instead telling people to use paper or cloth sacks to carry their shopping. Retailers faced prosecution if they were found to be providing them to grocery shoppers.

As shown on the timeline, global laws started to become more common. At least 23 laws, levies or pieces of legislation were introduced between 2008 and 2010 in 21 different countries.

Laws reach their peak, but production surpasses population

Laws started to reach their peak around 2017.  Free disposable plastic bags were banned in Catalonia, and Slovenia rolled this ban out on a national level.

But plastic production started to surpass population growth at this time. The reason? Well, global e-commerce sales totalled $2.38 billion in 2017, hitting $3.54 billion last year. The online boom comes with the need for packaging, which is often plastic.

New laws start to decline despite production increase

From 2018, new laws started to tail off, but production and population levels continued to rise. This may be due to the fact that certain laws, levies and legislation had been introduced in previous years, but it opens the debate that there’s still work to be done in order to help solve the world’s plastic problem.

There are encouraging signs though. In October 2020, a UK ban on the supply of plastic straws, stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds came into force.

The ban was introduced after it was revealed the UK was using 4.7 billion single-use straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds each year.

UK plastic laws

Like many other countries, the UK already has a levy on the use of plastic bags in shops. When the levy was introduced in Northern Ireland back in 2013, usage dropped by 71% in just one year. Scotland followed in 2014 and England in 2015—with the rule mandatory for companies who employed over 250 members of staff.

In November this year, Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael re-introduced the Plastics Pollution Bill, which calls for a 2025 target to end “non-essential single-use plastics”.

Over the years, plastic has been produced by many industries across the world and used in everyday items. Here’s a list of some historic plastic facts over the years.

Going forward, innovation needs to be at the heart of solving the world’s plastic problem. For industries who ship items online it can be a case of improving supply chains through the use of a reusable plastic pallet—where vehicle fill can be improved by up to 42 per cent.
